True Reincarnation Files: Patrick
The following is a true story…
In the late 1980s, a midwestern woman named Lisa gave birth to Kevin, a plump, happy baby boy. Shortly before his second birthday, Kevin developed a limp. His leg bones suddenly weakened to the point he could no longer stand or walk. Doctors noticed an unusual lump above his right ear, and a biopsy of the mass confirmed Kevin had metastatic neuroblastoma, a fatal cancer. Bruising appeared around his left eye, which soon went blind. Kevin grew weaker and sicker. Even aggressive chemotherapy, administered through a central line IV inserted into Kevin’s neck, could not save the boy.
Kevin’s death devastated Lisa. She eventually had another child, a daughter, and then another son, and life marched on. But the birth of her fourth child, Patrick, changed everything.
From birth, a cloudy film coated Patrick’s left eye; Lisa noticed it immediately. Later, doctors confirmed Patrick couldn’t see out of that eye, just like Kevin at the end of his life. The physical similarities between Patrick and Kevin didn’t end there. Patrick had a hard, harmless nodule directly above his right ear and a dark line on his neck, in the exact spot where Kevin’s central line had been inserted. Lisa couldn’t help but wonder: could Kevin be the reincarnated soul of her first-born son, who’d she’d lost nearly two decades before? Maybe it was all just a coincidence, she convinced herself.
Until Patrick turned four and began talking about Kevin’s life.
“Do you remember when I had surgery?” he asked one day, out of the blue. “Right here, on my right ear?” Of course, Patrick had never had such a surgery, but Kevin had, when doctors had biopsied his tumor. Patrick began remembering all sorts of specific experiences he’d never actually had. Walking the “little white puppy,” that day swimming in Grandma’s pool, playing with an apple-shaped bathtub toy, visiting a cattle ranch, living in the “chocolate and orange” house—all things only Kevin had done.
Shockingly, Patrick even revealed a family scandal, unknown to even his mother at the time. The dark secret involved a relative who’d been killed by his own stepfather while on a hike. Patrick claimed to have met this murdered man in heaven before being born. He could only identify the victim by the odd nickname “Billy the Pirate.” Lisa called everyone, even distant relatives, to investigate. Ultimately, it was her own mother who reluctantly confirmed the strange story. Indeed, a cousin everyone had called Billy the Pirate, was shot point-blank in the mountains by his stepfather, but no one ever talked about it. There was no way Patrick could have known.
Lisa firmly believed her son Patrick was the reincarnated soul of her first child, Kevin. The evidence is striking, but whether or not it’s true, the notion brought Lisa great relief. As far as she was concerned, her sweet, joyful Kevin had come back to her.
