True Reincarnation Files: Ryan

The following is a true story…

Ryan, a five-year-old boy, often yelled “Action!” when playing with other preschoolers, as if he was directing a movie. Then, one night, he woke his parents, terrified that his heart would explode, like it did when he was in Hollywood. But Ryan and his family lived in Oklahoma, and the boy had never been to California or suffered any heart problems. Could he have been remembering a past life?

Ryan’s mother showed him books about old Hollywood, hoping to trigger another memory. To her astonishment, her son recognized several actors in the photos. Not just the legendary faces, like Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe, but a few lesser known actors who played background characters or appeared in cigarette commercials.

Ryan had never seen a black and white movie and should have had no knowledge of 1930s cinema. Remarkably, flipping through the books, Ryan pointed at an image of a man in a still photo from the 1932 film Night After Night. “Mama, that guy’s me,” he said. “I found me!” Ryan explained that the movie had a scene involving guns hidden in a closet. Sure enough, when they watched it together, they confirmed that it did.

Over time, Ryan’s recollections became more specific. He described his former mother (with curly brown hair), his sister, his daughter, and his car (a green one). He said he lived on a street with Rock in the name in a big house with a swimming pool. He talked fondly of dancing on a Broadway stage in New York and traveling to Europe on a “big boat” where he danced with pretty ladies. Still, identifying an uncredited extra with no lines from a seventy-five-year-old film seemed nearly impossible.

Then, a breakthrough.

An archivist diligently dug through old footage and identified the man from the scene in Night After Night as Marty Martyn. Martyn indeed had a daughter, and she was still alive. Now in her fifties, Martyn’s daughter confirmed much of what Ryan had said about his supposed past life. Marty Martyn’s mother did have curly brown hair, Martyn did dance in New York, travel the world on luxury ocean liners, drive a green car, and live in a large house with a pool. Located on Roxbury Street—a name that does sound a bit like the word Rock.

Critics and skeptics often poke fun at people who claim to remember past lives as famous people, like Napoleon or Marylin Monroe. Perhaps the fact that Ryan remembered living as a little-known background actor with almost no onscreen success lends more credibility to his account.
