True Reincarnation Files: Samuel
The following is a true story…
A Finnish boy named Pertti was particularly accident prone. At age four, heavy equipment near a construction site fell on him, crushing his legs. He spent five months in casts, but eventually recovered. The next year, a dog bit him, causing great injury. Shortly thereafter, he went back into the hospital for a back injury. In his teenage years, he slipped off a dock into partially frozen water. The thin layer of ice on the water’s surface crumbled under his weight and he nearly drowned. Pertti developed a phobia of water after this last incident.
Perhaps it wasn’t surprising that Pertti, who’d been plagued with misfortune, died young. However, in the end it wasn’t an accident that killed him. He became ill and passed away suddenly at age eighteen.
Ten months later, Pertti’s younger sister, Marja, gave birth to Samuel. As soon as the boy could form words, he began talking about the life of his deceased uncle. Strangely, when asked his own name, Samuel answered, “Pertti.” Looking at an old photo album of Pertti, Samuel declared, “Mother, here I am in this picture.” He pointed to a photo of Pertti shortly after he’d recovered from the accident at the construction site. Samuel explained that the picture had been taken after doctors removed the plaster casts from his legs, which was true, for Pertti. Later, Samuel said, “I remember when the dog bit my leg.”
As far as his mother knew, no one had discussed Pertti’s childhood accidents with Samuel.
Samuel exhibited some similar behavior to his uncle Pertti, too. Every Christmas, up until his death, Pertti would go around and kiss every person in the room. It was a charming tradition, even if a little unusual. Too his family’s shock, when Samuel was only two, the boy circled the living room at Christmas, kissing each family member on the cheek. Exactly as Pertti had done every year. Furthermore, Samuel had an extreme fear of water and often refused baths.
However, despite these similarities, his family was still skeptical that Samuel could be Pertti reborn. To prove it, Samuel claimed he could locate Pertti’s beloved guitar, which no one had seen since Pertti’s death. Samuel climbed into the back of a cupboard and dug through a dusty box, where the guitar had been tucked away. Samuel announced that it was his own. He’d hidden it there when he’d lived as Pertti, Samuel claimed.
Samuel’s case is notable because of how many indicative characteristics it includes. He recognized objects that had belonged to his remembered past personality (Pertti’s guitar along with an old shirt and a watch); he spontaneously recalled details of his uncle’s life of which he had no prior knowledge (the accidents); and he expressed a similar phobia of water. And if know one knew the location of Pertti’s lost guitar, Samuel’s ability to locate it easily is fascinating to say the least.

I reviewed many fascinating, real cases like Samuel’s while conducting research for my new novel, DON’T GET CLOSE. In the novel, scientists plan to conduct a controversial experiment at government lab to prove what happens after death, and an infamous reincarnation cult will do whatever it takes to stop them.
